I just ate ten dollars’ worth of melon (assorted!) as an afternoon snack. Really hope this heat breaks soon so I can go back to baking (free, depending on what ingredients are in the house) and sweet potatoes (a dollar each—Recession food that isn’t depressing)!

I live in a pretty quiet section of Los Angeles—families, elderly Jews, B and C+-list celebrities who’ve invested well/avoided going to rehab.  When I got home tonight, there was a police helicopter circling my street (it was obviously circling the park around the corner, but show me a person who doesn’t see a police helicopter near-ish to their home and automatically assume...

A Promise I'm Making To Myself
I’m going to write about Boardwalk Empire and refrain from making any Jersey Shore puns/winky references.

This is a whispery post because tonight my Dad and I were eating dinner at Marie Callender’s (sorry, 8.99 for a burger, fries, and a slice of pie is basically unbeatable) and our waitress was a girl I’d gone to middle and high school with and HATED, because she was best friends with my best friend and went out of her way to be mean to me. We have the same birthday, and one year...

“Nestled beside where Lincoln’s killers were executed, the placement of the stadium may have unwittingly exposed the Nationals to the conspirators’ vengeful ghosts. That the apparitions of Booth and his gang would aim their ghoulish enmity on modern baseball may seem strange, but it makes sense given President Lincoln’s affinity for what became our national...

I hate that Fox makes Joe Buck pull sportscasting double-duty. It’s not that I hate Joe Buck (I’m not his biggest fan, but I’ve heard worse), it’s that I get confused when I hear his voice from across the room and I don’t know if he’s calling a football game or a baseball game. I guess it’s cost-effective, though.

I wish someone had told me about the real point of Fashion’s Night Out, which was obviously to get people drunk and lower their purchasing guard. I mean, how else do you end up with a custom-made crystal-and-sand-in-a-jar necklace created specially for you based on a short palm reading for the purposes of aura-detection?
